Welcome Sign Change, Recap of Hancock City Council Meeting

The Hancock City Council has approved a change to the face of the city.

The front wall welcome sign will be adjusted to mark the start of the Copper Country National Byway.

The council unanimously voted to approve the signage adding that it is a tasteful distinction for the city and a carefully considered change.

An ordinance increasing the water rate was passed in a five to one vote. The rates will increase $1 per every 1000 gallons, effective January 2016.

Also passed was a recommendation by the solid waste sub-committee–an increase to the ready-to-serve fee by $1.00 per month.

The fee will raise from $5.00 to $6.00 to expand recycling efforts with a drop-off recycling center at the DPW and to authorize commercial drop offs.

In other business, the City Council enthusiastically appointed John Haeussler to the Recreation Commission.

City manager Glenn Anderson reported that bidding for the 2016 Quincy street reconstruction has been delayed to February 2016.

He also gave a reminder that M-DOT still projects the Front Street portion of the project will not complete until 2017.

Due to this construction, the funded Hancock Street bike lane and curb bump outs will be bid next year.
