State Lawmakers Getting Varying Opinions on State Vaccine Opt-Out Rule

Health officials and citizens are telling state lawmakers what they think about Michigan’s vaccine opt out.

Parents can choose not to immunize their kids in Michigan, but they first have to visit their local health department to learn about the risks.

Doctor Jane Turner, an East Lansing Pediatrician, told a joint House-Senate panel, she supports immunization choice, as long as it’s informed.

But Joel Dorfman of Michigan Opposing Mandatory Vaccines, says most people that choose not to immunize are already informed.

He says they should be respected for their choice to protect their families and not treated as deviants.

Michigan’s new vaccine rule was implemented last year.
