MLB – Tigers Split Doubleheader
Justin Verlander gave up four runs over six innings, as the Detroit Tigers dropped the first game of their doubleheader with the Cleveland Indians 7-2 yesterday. Verlander cruised through the first four innings, but was touched for three runs in the fifth, and another in the sixth.
In the second game, Randy Wolf gave up two runs in the first, but the Tigers came back to claim a 9-2 victory. J.D. Martinez drove in three runs. Wolf lasted just three innings. Drew VerHagen got the win in relief.

The Tigers open a series at Minnesota tonight. Kyle Lobstein will start against Tyler Duffey. Hear the first pitch at 8:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
The Milwaukee Brewers couldn’t hold an early lead, and lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-6 in 11 innings. Khris Davis homered for Milwaukee. Game details are here.
The Brewers have today off, and host the Cardinals tomorrow night. Ariel Pena will pitch against Carlos Martinez. Tyler Thornburg took the loss in relief.
High School
In high school volleyball today, Dollar Bay and Ironwood play at a triangular at Lake Linden-Hubbell.
The Team Copper Country U18 hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie with the Soo Indians yesterday. Reid Pietila scored twice, and Cole Jepson once. Dawson Kero was in net.
MTU
The MTU soccer team faces Minnesota-Crookston at the University of Minnesota-Duluth field this afternoon.
Finlandia
The Finlandia women’s soccer team earned its first victory of the season yesterday with a 1-0 shutout of Mount Mary University. Robyn Peppey scored for the Lions, and Erin Elsner got the win in goal. The box score is here.
NFL
The Detroit Lions took a quick early lead, but faded down the stretch, and lost to the San Diego Chargers 33-28. San Diego scored the final 30 points of the game to complete the comeback. Matthew Stafford completed 19 of 30 passes for 246 yards and two touchdowns. Philip Rivers threw for 404 yards against the Detroit defense. Game details are here.
The Green Bay Packers trailed at halftime, but used a strong second half to beat the Chicago Bears 31-23. Aaron Rodgers completed 18 of 23 passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns. Chicago’s Matt Forte rushed for 141 yards. Game details are here.
There’s an NFL doubleheader tonight. The Eagles visit the Falcons in the first game, and the Vikings play at San Francisco in the late contest.
