School sex education classes would be required to teach more than just abstinence as a preventative tactic against sexually transmitted disease, under bills in both the state House and Senate.
The legislation would require schools use medically accurate and age appropriate information in their sex ed courses.
Senator Hoon-Young Hopgood, a sponsor, says the legislation would standardize Michigan’s sex ed programs.
He says teaching both abstinence and contraception, is most effective for young people.
Under existing law contraception isn’t required to be taught, only abstinence.
But a federal study has found abstinence only programs have no measurable impact on delaying teen sex.
