Lawmaker Wants to Stiffen Penalties for Blowing Past School Bus Stop Signs

Drivers that disregard school bus stop signs will face stiffer penalties, under new legislation in the Michigan Senate.

State Senator Curtis Hertel says more children are hurt outside the bus than in school bus traffic accidents.

His hope is his bill will raise awareness of Michigan’s law requiring motorists to stop for school buses that are offloading kids.

Under the bill, a first offense fine would increase by $150, from a minimum of $100 to $250 with a maximum of $500.

Second and subsequent offense penalties would range from $500 to $1,000.

A second time offender could also have their license suspended.
