MTU Wildlife Ecologist Weighs in on Isle Royale Wolf Dilemma

A wildlife ecologist from Michigan Technological University, who’s spent the better part of the last two decades studying wolves and moose on Isle Royale, says the National Park Service should introduce new wolves onto the island now.

John Vucetich says the three wolves on the island stopped killing moose a few years ago, which has caused the moose population to explode and that could pose a threat to vegetation on the island.

He says the situation has drifted from being preventable to it being a problem.

The National Park Service is in the midst of a study to determine what to do about the dwindling wolf population.

That study won’t wrap up until 2017.
