A conference committee, made up of lawmakers from the Michigan House and Senate, are meeting Wednesday to hammer out a road funding solution.
House Speaker Kevin Cotter calls the forming of a conference committee a big step.
He says both sides have come to the table with ideas and concessions.
On the table are increases to both the gas tax and the diesel tax as well as registration fee increases.
Money could also be pulled from the general fund, which could force some state agencies to cut their budgets.
Cotter is hopeful lawmakers can vote on a funding plan before the House adjourns on Thursday.
