Immunization Shot Waivers Must Be Picked Up From Health Department

As the new school year quickly approaches, most parents will be making sure their child is up to date with their immunization shots.

But others will choose not to.

Schools require students be up to date with their immunizations when they first enter school, start 7th grade or change schools.

If a parent decides to pass on immunization shots for their child, they must obtain a waiver.

Previously, those waivers were picked up at the school but now they must be obtained from the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department.

Director of Public Health and Education Barb Outen explains what for.

If the parent still chooses, they can then sign the waiver from the Health Department and take it to the school.

Michigan has the fourth highest waiver rate in the country and Houghton County has the second highest number of waivers in the state.
