Michigan Tech continues to be a leader in stewardship of the Great Lakes and now they are using that expertise in the Straits of Mackinac.
Governor Rick Snyder visited Houghton Thursday to see first hand how the Great Lakes Research Center is using high-tech equipment like a Supercomputer and a monitoring buoy to measure water conditions for Enbridge Energy, which has pipeline that traverses the straits.
Snyder says the work being done here is vital to the Great Lakes.
If funding can be secured from the Great Lakes Protection Fund, Michigan Tech could implement an innovative Predictive Alert System to improve response time in case of an emergency or spill.
Snyder says the proposal is in line with recommendations in a report from the Department of Environmental Quality.
The PAS is a $1.7 million dollar program that the Great Lakes Research Center would like the Governor to support.
