Peters Introduced CECIL Act

Legislation has been introduced in the U.S. Senate to prohibit the importation of trophies of species that are listed, or proposed for listing under the Endangered Species Act.

U.S. Senate Democrat Gary Peters of Michigan is a co-sponsor.

He says the measure will help prevent increased sport hunting of animals that may already be in danger of becoming extinct but not yet formally listed under the ESA.

The act is titled the CECIL act, which stands for “Ceasing the Importation of Large Animal Trophies.”

It’s named for the African lion who had been part of an Oxford University study on lion conservation but was killed by a hunter.
