Science Of An Ice Rink Part Of Keweenaw Science & Engineering Festival

As part of the Keweenaw Science and Engineering Festival, the Science of an Ice Rink will take place this Thursday, August 6th, 2 pm, at Dee Stadium on Houghton’s waterfront.

The presentation will be done by Scott MacInnes, former Houghton City Manager and son of the late MTU hockey coach, John MacInnes, and rink manager Kevin Maki.

The tour will show you the large refrigeration system and how it works to keep over 16,000sf of concrete cold enough to keep ice on it.

There will be a short power point presentation on how the ice is made and how the lines are put on the ice.

You will also get an inside look at a Zamboni and how it works, plus get a chance to sit in the driver’s seat and get your picture taken.

At the end of the tour you will have an opportunity to visit the Hockey History Museum and see a short video The Money Game produced as part of a 10 part mini-series on the History of Hockey by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation which explains how Houghton became the Birthplace of Professional Hockey.

Also the Copper Country Historic Exhibit featuring the Ralph Raffaelli historic photo collection is open until the end of August, M-F 8am to 4pm.
