How Much Will Charters Grow?

The number of charter schools in Michigan has recorded a net increase of only three as preparations are underway for the 2015-2016 school year.

There were seven new charters for the year, however four charters closed.

While charters now represent just over half of the students enrolled in Detroit, the same type of growth won’t happen in the rest of the state, according to Gary Naeyaert (NAY-ert) of the Great Lakes Education Project, which represents charter schools.

He says statewide charter enrollment represents less than ten percent of students and he doesn’t see it ever growing to the percentage seen in Detroit, adding that the growth in Detroit is due to the troubled nature of Detroit Public Schools.
