MLB – Tigers Fall in 11th
Mookie Betts slid under Alex Avila’s tag to score the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning, as the Boston Red Sox edged the Detroit Tigers 2-1 last night. Betts scored from second base on Xander Bogaerts’ single off Blaine Hardy. Detroit manager Brad Ausmus challenged the very close play, but umpires confirmed the call. The loss spoiled Justin Verlander’s best effort of the season – one run on seven hits (all singles) over eight innings. Former Tiger Rick Porcello was just as effective for Boston, giving up a run on five hits over seven frames.

Jimmy Nelson tossed seven scoreless innings, as the Milwaukee Brewers slipped past the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-1 last night. Ryan Braun homered. Francisco Rodriguez gave up a run in the ninth, but closed out the game to earn his 22nd save.

The Brewers continue that series at Arizona this afternoon. Taylor Jungmann will pitch against Rubby De La Rosa.

2015-07-18 - Portage Little League 9-10 ChampsThe Portage Lake 9-10 year-old All-Stars suffered their first loss of the year with an 8-2 setback to Bay City Northwest in the opening game of pool play at the state tournament in St. Clair last evening. Portage scored in the top of the first inning for a 1-0 lead and trailed just 2-1 after three. Bay City was able to bring across two runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth for an 8-1 lead. PL went down swinging, scoring one and loading the bases in the top of the sixth before succumbing. Portage Lake posted six hits including two off the bat of starting pitcher Dylan Primeau.

Portage Lake will face Tecumseh 5:00 this afternoon… then face Tecumseh tomorrow at 5:00, and Petoskey Sunday at 5:00.

2015-07-18 - Portage Little League Major ChampsThe Portage Lake Major League all-stars are in Harper Woods for the state tournament. They’ll open this afternoon at 2:30 against Roosevelt Park… then face Grosse Pointe Farms City tomorrow morning at 11:45, and Blissfield Monday morning at 10:00.

Red Wings Sign Jurco
The Detroit Red Wings signed the last of their conditional free agents yesterday, inking forward Tomas Jurco to a two-year deal. He’ll make around $900,000 per season.

Marquette Electricians Fold
Marquette ElectriciansAfter nearly 30 years, the Marquette Electricians will cease operations. Marquette Junior Hockey President Jeff Cornock announced yesterday that the 18U AAA midget major team will shut down, effective immediately.

The Electricians began play as a AAA program in the fall of 1986. Alumni include Andy Roach, Jeff Finger, Mark Olver and Justin Florek.

According to a press release, head coach Nate Taurence worked for the past four months to attract quality players from across the state, but “that quest was unsuccessful.”
