MLB – Tigers Fall in 12th
Mark Zunino’s 12th-inning double off Ian Kroll drive in the winning run, as the Seattle Mariners edged the Detroit Tigers 3-2 yesterday afternoon. Detroit’s only runs came in the first inning, on a double by Victor Martinez. David Price pitched eight strong innings, giving up just two runs on five hits.

The Tigers open a series at Boston tonight. Justin Verlander will start against former Tiger Rick Porcello. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Zach Godley struck out seven over six shutout innings in his major league debut last night, as the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 8-3. Milwaukee starter Mike Fiers struck out 10 batters over five innings, but also gave up five runs and took the loss. The Brewers didn’t score until Ryan Braun hit a three-run homer in the ninth inning.

Aramis RamirezThe Brewers continue that series at Arizona tonight. Jimmy Nelson will pitch against Patrick Corbin.

Milwaukee traded third-baseman Aramis Ramirez to the Pittsburgh Pirates yesterday. In exchange, the Brewers get minor league pitcher Yhonathan Barrios, a 23-year-old Triple-A reliever. Ramirez has said he will retire at the end of this season. He began his career with the Pirates.

In Copper Country Twilight League baseball last night…
– At the Dollar Bay field, the Stanton Wildcats defeated Dean Kangas-State Farm 12-6. Eric Nettle hit a two-run homer for Stanton. Cole Jepson struck out seven to earn the complete-game win.
– At the Wolverine field, Wolverine/Orbit got past Pat’s Foods/Mosquito Inn 12-9.

Women’s Fast Pitch Tourney Begins Tonight
The women’s fast pitch softball league tournament will be held tonight and tomorrow. This evening, Semifinal One will be played at 7:00 at the Boneyard in Lake Linden between Family Chiropractic and Auto Pro Glass and Tire. Semifinal Two will begin at 7:00 at the Chassell Field between Mattila Rock and Dock and Northern Michigan Land Brokers.

The winners  will play for the championship at 11:00 tomorrow morning at the Chassell Field.

North Star BP and Pat’s Foods were unable to get enough players for the tournament, and will not participate. The public is invited to all games.

Portage Lake All-Stars Begin State Tourney

2015-07-18 - Portage Little League Major ChampsThe Portage Lake Major League all-stars are in Harper Woods for the state tournament. They’ll open tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 against Roosevelt Park… then face Grosse Pointe Farms City Sunday morning at 11:45, and Blissfield Monday morning at 10:00.

Guion Faces Suspension
The Green Bay Packers could be without defensive tackle Letroy Guion for the first three games of the NFL season. Guion was charged with possession of marijuana and a firearm after being arrested in February. Guion says he’s been informed by the league that he will be suspended for three games. He also says he’ll appeal the ruling.
