Hancock Residents Will Vote On Millage To Use Portage Lake District Library

Hancock residents could vote to join the Portage Lake District Library as the result of a resolution passed by the city council Wednesday.

Currently, non-district residents can pay to join the library located on the Houghton waterfront.

But recently the library has proposed the Hancock elect to adopt a millage rate of 2 mills so that all city residents can use the library.

That rate would run a property owner with a taxable value of $100,000 $200 per year and generate about $200,000 in revenue for the library.

Supporters say this will allow all residents to enjoy the amenities of the Portage Lake District Library without having to pay an out-of-district membership.

Opponents don’t want tax money from Hancock to go to a Houghton library that will only be used by a few city residents and would rather that money be spent within the city.

Ultimately, voters will get to decide.

The resolution means the issue will be put on the ballot in 2016.
