A new report is calling for prohibiting any effort to start transporting tar sands and heavy crude oil through the Straits of Mackinac pipelines.
The aging pipelines have been the target of environmental and other groups who say they’re a major accident waiting to happen.
The report, which was a joint effort co-chaired by Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette and Director of the Department of Environmental Quality Dan Wyant, also requires Enbridge to be fully insured, and to disclose coverage pipeline safety reports.
It also requires creation of a public advisory board on pipeline safety.
