MLB – Tigers Collapse in Ninth
The Minnesota Twins scored seven runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, and came from behind to beat the Detroit Tigers 8-6 last night. Detroit’s lead seemed secure as the final frame opened, but Bruce Rondon gave up a single, a double, and an RBI single. Joakim Soria replaced him, and issued a walk to load the bases. He hit a batter to drive in a run, gave up an RBI single to Danny Santana, and then the game-winning homer to Brian Dozier.
The stunning loss spoiled Justin Verlander’s finest start of the season. Verlander pitched seven shutout innings, then left after allowing a single run in the eighth. The Tigers had built an early lead on homers by Yoenis Cespedes, J.D. Martinez and Victor Martinez.
The Tigers continue that series at Minnesota this evening. Alfredo Simon will pitch against Phil Hughes. Hear the first pitch at 2:05 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
Before last night’s game, the Tigers granted reliever Joba Chamberlain his unconditional release. Detroit recently designated Chamberlain for assignment. He now becomes a free agent, and can sign with any team.
Jimmy Nelson carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but the Los Angeles Dodgers scored three times to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2 last night. All three runs were unearned, following a two-out error by Hernan Perez.
The Brewers continue that west coast series against the Dodgers tonight. Taylor Jungmann will start against Brandon Beachy.
Red Wings Sign Nyquist
The Detroit Red Wings have signed forward Gustav Nyquist to a four year, 19-million dollar contract. Nyquist was a restricted free agent who had filed for arbitration.
