Senator Smith Pleads Not Guilty

State Senator Virgil Smith has plead not guilty at an arraignment Thursday for allegedly beating his ex-wife and shooting at her with an assault rifle.

The Detroit Democrat is charged with felonious assault, malicious destruction of personal property, domestic assault and a weapons charge.

The 35-year old Smith is accused of assaulting his ex-wife following a party on May 10th. He allegedly fired several shots at her car after she showed up at his Detroit home and found him with another woman.

Smith faces up to 12 years in prison if convicted on all charges.

His trial has been scheduled for December 7th in Wayne County Circuit Court.
