Recycling Fee Causing Residents To Think Twice

Are you willing to pay more to recycle than to just throw those items away?

Some people are worried that new fees being charged by Waste Management is causing people to choose the latter.

Previously, there was no cost to drop off recyclables at their site in Houghton, but Waste Management says they must now charge $4.00 per vehicle due to increasing costs.

Houghton Resident Doug Terrell shared his concerns with the city council at their regular monthly meeting Wednesday.

City Manager Eric Waara said he intends to meet with Waste Management about the issue.

Terrell said he hopes something can be done about the fee. Though he will likely continue to recycle, he is not so sure that everyone else will.

The city of Houghton’s contract with Waste Management runs through next year.
