Drill Shop Renovation Donations Still Being Accepted

The Calumet Township’s Drill Shop Project fundraiser is still requesting local donations.

The fundraiser has raised nearly $25,000 of its $32,000 goal and if it can reach its goal, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) will match it for a total of $64,000.

The Drill Shop was built by the Calumet & Hecla Mining Company in 1885.

Calumet Township purchased the building in 2004 after it had sat empty for many decades.

The Copper Country Curling Club uses a section of the building during the winter months.

Calumet Township plans to transform the entire Drill Shop building into a year-round activity and curling center.

Once the project is complete, the facility will be handicapped accessible throughout; a large barrier-free bathroom will be added; a large community room will be built inside the building; and three large activity bays will be developed that will feature a hockey shooting and goal tending area, a batting and pitching area for baseball and softball, and two horse shoe courts.

The fundraiser ends a week from Friday (July 17th).
