Efforts by some lawmakers and support from Michigan’s Secretary of State so far does not seem to be enough to push through legislation to allow voters to obtain an absentee ballot without being required to give a reason.
Current law requires voters to cite a reason for obtaining an absentee ballot, such as a disability or being over the age of 60.
The bill would open up access to all voters.
Secretary of State Ruth Johnson supports the bill, saying it’s a matter of convenience for voters.
But key opponents in the Michigan Senate have not supported changing the law, and have made it clear the bill won’t make it through their chamber even if it passes the Michigan House, where the measure now sits.
