Offensive “Crippled Children” Language Removed From State Law

Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley has signed a series of bills eliminating language from the Public Health Code that is now considered offensive when referring to children with disabilities.

The bills remove all offensive references to “crippled children” from state law.

The references in law will now be described as “children or youth with special health care needs.”

The lieutenant governor has the authority to sign legislation when the governor is out of state.
