Michigan Middle Of The Pack In Unemployment

With a jobless rate in May of 5.5 percent, Michigan ranks near the middle of the states in terms of unemployment.

According to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 19 states with higher jobless rates than Michigan in May. Two are Great Lakes states. Both Illinois at 6 percent and New York at 5.7 percent had higher unemployment rates than Michigan.

West Virginia had the highest rate in the nation last month at 7.2 percent. followed by Nevada at 7 percent.

Nebraska had the lowest jobless rate of 2.6 percent, while North Dakota came in at 3.1 percent.

Minnesota continued to have the lowest unemployment rate among the Great Lakes states at 3.8 percent.
