In high school hockey last night…
- Jeffers opened up a quick early lead, and downed Calumet 6-2. Benton Rajala had a hat trick for the Jets. Brogan Turner, Cody Turner and Brit Heinonen also found the net. Nathan Londo and Kobe Solmonson scored for Calumet. Kasen Helminen earned the win in net with 23 saves. Beau Jukuri stopped 39 shots for Calumet. Hear the game replay here.
Houghton has slipped out of the top spot in this week’s Michigan High School Hockey Coaches Association Division 3 rankings. The Gremlins’ 5-1 loss to Brother Rice Friday dropped them back to number-two in D-3, and down to number-seven in the all-division Super 10. Orchard Lake St. Mary’s claims the D-3 top spot this week. Jeffers is ranked sixth, Calumet seventh, and Escanaba 10th. Unbeaten Detroit Catholic Central leads the Super 10.
In girls high school basketball last night…
- Calumet used a late surge to slip past Houghton 48-41. The Copper Kings led by 10 at halftime, but were outscored 18-2 by the Gremlins in the third quarter. Calumet turned the tables, outpointing Houghton 21-8 in the fourth quarter to claim the win. Kiirsi Johnson led Calumet with 16 points, and Jackie Kiiluen added 14. Eva Gerard netted 14 for the Gremlins, and Ruby Zawada 13. Hear the game replay here.
- Hancock got past Ironwood 42-34.
- Lake Linden-Hubbell cruised past Ontonagon 65-42.
- Dollar Bay-Tamarack City lost to Wakefield-Marenisco 57-35.
- Ewen-Trout Creek dispatched Baraga 61-34.
- West Iron County fell to Ishpeming 63-47.
- Forest Park downed North Central 46-31.
In boys action…
- Calumet shut down Hancock 41-24. Gavin Sturos and Micah Pieti each scored nine for the Copper Kings, and Kent Koskela added eight. Jayden Nuttall paced the Bulldogs with six points.
- Ontonagon outscored Lake Linden-Hubbell 59-34.
- Ewen-Trout Creek raced past Baraga 61-37.

The latest Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters high school basketball poll has Marquette on top of the boys Divisions 1-3 ratings. Kingsford, Westwood, Iron Mountain and Negaunee round out the top five. Forest Park remains atop the boys Division 4 poll, with Dollar Bay-Tamarack City second. Pickford, North Dickinson and Norway fill out the top five. Negaunee leads the girls Divisions 1-3 ratings, with Gladstone second. Houghton is third, followed by Sault Ste, Marie and Ishpeming. Calumet received honorable mention votes. St. Ignace is number-one in the girls Division 4 poll. Ewen-Trout Creek is second, followed by Munising. L’Anse is fourth, and Lake Linden-Hubbell fifth.
NHL
The Red Wings’ seven-game win streak ended with a 6-3 loss to the Sharks last night. Vladimir Tarasenko scored twice for Detroit, and Lucas Raymond found the net once. Ville Husso made 18 saves, and took the loss.
The Wings visit the Panthers tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Pistons host the Pacers tomorrow.
NFL
Lions’ running back David Montgomery was a full participant in the team’s walk-through practice yesterday. After missing three games with a knee injury, he expects to be ready for Saturday’s NFC Divisional playoff game against the Commanders. Cornerback Terrion Arnold could also be ready, after he was hurt in week 18.
