High School

In high school hockey last night…

  • Houghton dropped a 5-1 decision to Brother Rice. Jace DeForge scored the Gremlins’ only goal on a power play in the first period. Cooper Flachs took the loss in net. The Gremlins outshot the Warriors 35-20.
  • Hancock fell to Waukesha North 5-4.

On today’s hockey schedule…

  • Calumet entertains Brother Rice. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.

In boys basketball last night…

  • Houghton outscored Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 89-50.
  • L’Anse downed Hancock 58-35.
  • Ontonagon defeated Chassell 60-42.
  • Baraga cruised past Watersmeet 71-43.

In girls action…

  • Houghton overcame a 12-point third-quarter deficit, and got past Westwood 56-50 in overtime. Ruby Zawada had 21 points and eight rebounds for the Gremlins. Tessa Rautiola added 14 points, and Eva Gerard scored 11.
  • L’Anse smothered Bessemer 68-21.
  • Ontonagon shut down Chassell 31-19.
  • Baraga overwhelmed Watersmeet 87-8.
  • Forest Park fell to Stephenson 58-43.

In high school swimming, Houghton hosts its annual Houghton Splash Invitational today.

College Hockey

The MTU hockey team couldn’t hold a two-goal lead, and suffered a 4-2 loss to Lake Superior State last night. Chase Pietila and Matthew Campbell scored early in the second period for the Huskies. The Lakers responded with four straight goals, including an empty netter. Tech outshot LSSU 39-18.  Derek Mullahy suffered the loss in net. The Huskies and Lakers meet again tonight at 6:07 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

The Northern Michigan hockey team stunned 12th-ranked Minnesota State 3-2 last evening. Ryan Duguay had a hat trick for the Wildcats. Ryan Ouellette made 25 saves, as NMU earned its second win of the season. Those teams skate again tonight in Marquette.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech teams will host Roosevelt University today – the women at noon, and the men at 2:00.

Both Northern teams have today off.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers routed the Sun Prairie Killer Bees 13-5 last night. They’ll visit the Dane County Dairy Kings tonight.

The Calumet Wolverines visit the Eagle River Falcons tonight.

NHL

The Red Wings won their sixth straight game last night, 5-3 over the Blackhawks. Alex DeBrincat, Lucas Raymond, Andrew Copp, Albert Johansson and Marco Kasper scored for Detroit. Patrick Kane had three assists. Johansson’s goal was his first in the NHL. Cam Talbot had to make just 12 saves to get the win in goal.

The Wings entertain the Kraken tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 2:45 on KBear 102.3.

The Pistons host the Raptors tonight. 

NFL

The playoffs open this weekend.

  • The Chargers visit the Texans for a 4:30 game.
  • The Ravens host the Steelers in an 8:00 contest.
