High School
In high school hockey Saturday…
- Houghton shut down Trenton 7-1. The Gremlins broke the early 1-1 tie with two goals late in the second period, then piled on four more in the third. Jack Sayen scored twice, and Brody Donnelly, Teegan Tapani, Brendan Kari, Jace DeForge and Connor Arko collected one each. Brycyn Nettel made 14 saves.
- Jeffers blanked Ashland 8-0.
- Calumet fell to Hartland 5-0. Three of the Eagles’ goals came in the final four minutes. Beau Jukuri made 32 saves for the Copper Kings.
College Basketball
The Northern Michigan men’s team routed Division III Northland College 83-37 Saturday. All 12 Wildcats players scored.
The NMU women’s team plays at Ashland this afternoon.
NHL
The Red Wings suffered a lopsided 5-1 loss to the Canadiens Saturday. Joe Veleno’s early goal gave Detroit a short-lived lead, as the Habs netted five straight off Alex Lyon.
The Wings host the Blues Monday. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, Wings coverage will begin at 6:45 on KBear 102.3.
NBA
The Pistons scored 41 points in the first quarter, and held on to beat the Suns 133-125 Saturday night. Cade Cunningham scored 28. Jalen Duren had 17 points and 11 rebounds.
The Pistons visit the Lakers Monday night.
NFL
In Saturday’s NFL games…
- The Chiefs dispatched the Texans 27-19.
- The Ravens downed the Steelers 34-17.
The Lions visit the Bears in a 1:00 game today. The Packers host the Saints in the Monday night contest. Both games will be broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
MLB
The Tigers continue to add pitching depth. The most recent signee is Matt Gage, who split last season between the Triple-A teams of the Dodgers and Mets. He’s been assigned to Toledo, for now.
