High School

In high school boys basketball last night…

  • Houghton outscored L’Anse 74-46. 
  • Calumet defeated Baraga 55-33. Gavin Sturos scored 18 for the Copper Kings, and Kent Koskela added 15. Jayme Denomie led the Vikings with 10 points.
  • Forest Park got past Munising 62-56.

In girls action…

  • L’Anse shaded Calumet 52-51.

In hockey last night…

  • Houghton handed Hartland its first loss of the season, 3-1. Jay Halonen scored the Gremlins’ first goal, then sealed the win with an empty-netter. Jace Deforge netted the eventual game-winner. Brycyn Nettel made 22 saves.
  • Calumet fell to Trenton 3-1. Erik Loukus got the Copper Kings’ only goal late in the game. Beau Jukuri had 24 saves on 27 shots for Calumet. Hear the game replay here.

College Basketball

The Northern Michigan women’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the season yesterday, falling 68-50 at Northwood. Jacy Weisbrod scored 27 for the Wildcats.

The NMU men’s team hosts Northland this afternoon.

College Soccer

Northern Michigan University is looking for a new women’s soccer coach. Jon Sandoval has accepted the head coaching position at Division I Loyola University in Chicago. In five seasons at NMU, Sandoval set program records in overall winning percentage, conference winning percentage, and single-season winning percentage (81.8%, 2023). He was named GLIAC Coach of the Year twice. The regular season and postseason conference championships under Sandoval in 2023 and 2024 were the first in program history.

NHL

Patrik Laine’s goal with eight minutes remaining gave the Canadiens a 4-3 victory over the Red Wings in the first game of a home-and-home series last night in Detroit. Patrick Kane, Joe Veleno and Tyler Motte scored for Detroit. Cam Talbot made 29 saves, but took the loss in net.

The Wings visit the Canadiens tonight. We’ll join the game in progress after Calumet High School hockey on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Pistons visit the Suns tonight.

NFL

There are two NFL games today…

  • The Texans visit the Chiefs for a 1:00 game.
  • The Ravens host the Steelers in a 4:30 contest.

Doubleheader coverage will begin at 12:30 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Lions visit the Bears in a 1:00 game tomorrow. The Packers host the Saints in the Monday night contest. Both games will be broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Tigers added some catching depth by signing journeyman Brian Serven to a minor league contract. He’s seen major league time with the Blue Jays and Rockies, but is expected to spend most or all of the season at Toledo. 

Detroit also re-signed reliever Brendan White to a minor-league deal. He missed most of last season with injuries, and has also been assigned to the Mud Hens.

Former Brewers reliever Hoby Milner has signed a one-year deal with the Rangers.
