In the past several years the VFW Post 4624 of Hubbell has supported Lake Linden and Dollar Bay students with scholarships for education.
The Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy essay programs through the veterans of foreign wars ask students to write on a topic, for opportunities to earn scholarship awards at local state, and national levels. During the school year teachers play instrumental roles helping students plan, outline, draft, and edit their work.
For their efforts, teachers can also earn recognition, like Lake Linden English Teacher Heather French has this year.
Being nominated by my students for the VFW Teacher of the Year Award is humbling. I’m honored and just kind of in shock. I just found out recently and didn’t know anything about it. So it’s exciting. French’s nomination for the VFW District 15 Teacher of the Year award is unique. Most often, teachers receive nominations from administrators or leadership.
39 students from Lake Linden and Dollar Bay school districts participated in VFW 4624’s essay program.
Dollar Bay student Caleb Kantela’s essay was also nominated for District 15 recognition recognition this year.
