Hockey Wins for Gremlins, Jets – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey last evening…

  • Houghton outscored Calumet 6-2. Connor Arko scored twice for the Gremlins, and Noah Maillette  Jay Halonen, Teegan Tapani and Jack Sayen each found the net once. Both of Calumet’s tallies came in the third period, from Liam Pomroy and Nathan London.
  • Jeffers downed Hancock 6-2. For the Jets, Benton Rajala and Brogan Turner each collected hat tricks. Rajala also had three assists, as did Max Nordstrom. Conner Helminen scored both of Hancock’s goals.

In boys basketball last night…

  • Chassell defeated Hancock 38-26.
  • Ewen-Trout Creek throttled Bessemer 69-19.
  • West Iron County fell to Kingsford 75-33.
  • Forest Park shaded Menominee 44-41.

In girls action last evening…

  • Houghton breezed past Iron Mountain 71-48. Eva Gerard scored 28 for the Gremlins, Tessa Rautiola added 16, and Ellie Hainault 14.
  • Hancock shut down Chassell 57-10.
  • Lake Linden-Hubbell dispatched Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 76-46. Cleo Milkey scored 32 for the Lakes.

On the boys schedule tonight…

  • Houghton plays at Ontonagon.

In a girls-boys doubleheader…

  • L’Anse welcomes Watersmeet.

The Houghton swim teams swept Westwood yesterday…

  • The boys earned a 127-35 victory, winning every event except diving. Individual winners included Brett Gaff in the 200 freestyle, Beau Haataja in the 200 individual medley and the and 100 butterfly, Collin Raasio in the 50 and 100 freestyles, Josh Bennett in the 500 freestyle, Caleb Thomas in the 100 backstroke, and Anderson Limkemann in the 100 breaststroke.
  • The girls claimed a 114-62 win. Individual winners included Rose Dennis  in the 200 freestyle, Evelyn LaTendresse in the 100 butterfly, Stella Soumis in the 100 freestyle, and Willow Jenson in the 100 backstroke. 

For only the second time since 1968, Negaunee High School is looking for a new head football coach. Paul Jacobsen retired from the position this week. During his 25-year tenure, the team made the playoffs 23 times, and won 70 percent of its games.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team plays at Wisconsin-Green Bay this afternoon.

NHL

The Red Wings entertain the Flyers tonight. Goalie Alex Lyon should be ready to return, after recovering from a lower body injury. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons will host the Jazz tomorrow.

MLB

Akil Baddoo is still a Tiger. Baddoo was recently placed on waivers to open a spot on the team’s 40-man roster. No other team claimed him, and he ahs been assigned to Toledo.

Detroit also signed pitcher Ryan Miller to a minor league contract. Miller split time last season between the Angels and their Triple-A Salt Lake City affiliate. 

The Brewers have named Julio Borbón as their new first base coach. He’s spent the past three seasons in the Twins organization.
