Local Volleyball Players Claim All-State Honors – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school boys basketball last night…

  • Hancock lost to Watersmeet 51-34.
  • L’Anse outscored Superior Central 49-41.

On the basketball schedule this evening… 

  • Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at Chassell, with the varsity tip-off at 6:00.
  • Dollar Bay-Tamarack City visits Jeffers.

On the hockey schedule this evening…

  • Jeffers skates at Escanaba.

The Houghton swim team v Westwood yesterday – no report.

Several local student-athletes have earned All-State honors from the Michigan High School Volleyball Coaches Association.

  • In Division Three, Calumet’s Allie Bjorn and Maddie Torola were placed on the first team. Teammate Jackie Killunen joined them on the third team. All are seniors.
  • In Division Four, Brooke Koskela from Hancock was placed on the second team, and Ava Fischer from Forest Park on the third team. Kiera Isaacson from Dollar Bay-Tamarack City was an honorable mention.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team hosts St. Cloud State tonight.

College Volleyball

Michigan Tech is beginning the search for a new head volleyball coach. Matt Jennings has stepped down after 13 seasons with the program. He will relocate to Grand Rapids, and become Director of Volleyball Operations and an Assistant Coach with the Grand Rapids Rise. The Rise competes in the Pro Volleyball Federation, an eight-team league that is entering its second season of competition. Jennings ranks second in program history with 223 wins, and his .587 winning percentage is the highest among the seven all-time Tech volleyball coaches. Matt’s wife, Mary Jennings, recently left her position as director of the Rozsa Center to become executive director of the Grand Rapids Ballet.

The Red Wings welcome the Flames tonight, with coverage beginning at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift. 

NBA

The Pistons visit the Grizzlies this evening.

NFL

In tomorrow’s NFL games…

  • The Lions host the Bears in a 12:30 contest on 99.3 The Lift.
  • The Cowboys welcome the Giants for a 4:30 tilt.

The Lions have released pass rusher James Houston. Houston was a sixth-round pick in the 2022 draft. He showed promise as a rookie, but missed most of last season with a leg injury, and never got back on track this year. He was immediately claimed off waivers by the Panthers.
