Alleged Credit Card Fraudsters May Be Linked to Crimes Elsewhere

Two people recently arrested for credit card fraud allegedly committed in Houghton County may also be connected to a similar string of crimes in Ohio.

Twenty-eight-year-old Shiym Edwards and 25-year-old Destiny Johnson were reported to police after a suspicious purchase of lottery tickets and high-end alcohol early this month. Their license plate was noted, and they were arrested by state police troopers in Iron County.

Both have been arraigned on charges that they were using stolen credit cards.

Houghton P.D.’s investigation also revealed that Edwards was wanted on similar charges in Midland, M,I and Johnson had outstanding warrants in Wright County, MN. They may also be tied to a stolen credit card ring operating out of Akron, Ohio.

A Houghton Police Department spokesman noted that there have been a number of fraudulent credit charges reported from across the region, dating back to last spring. More operatives could be working in the region.

They encourage retailers to be alert, always check ID’s of people you don’t personally know, and write down the license plate number of anyone who looks dodgy, particularly if they’re purchasing lottery tickets or high-end alcohol.
