ATV Rider Killed In Crash

A downstate man is dead after an ATV accident in Alger County Sunday.

Troopers from the Munising Detachment of the Michigan State Police Negaunee Post say they responded to the crash on an unnamed logging road near Grand Sable Lake in Burt Township around 6:00 p.m.

Upon investigation, troopers found that a 2014 Polaris Ranger operated by 28–year–old Christopher Purple of Madison Heights struck an embankment on the road. He was thrown from the vehicle.

He was transported to Helen Newberry Joy Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Purple was not wearing a helmet or seat belt at the time of the crash.

Purple’s passenger, a 27–year–old woman also from Madison Heights, received minor injuries.

Police say excessive speed, alcohol use, and the lack of restraint use were factors in the crash.
